Shane Bunnag

Shane BunnagShane BunnagShane Bunnag

As a child I would walk in my sleep, waking in unexpected parts of the house. I'm still that somnolent wanderer. Life is filled with small miracles, epiphanies glimpsed in the roof-beams while lying on the living-room floor

I grew up in England and Greece, and  studied history at the University of Edinburgh.

Some more assorted facts:

I had my first film job working at Merchant Ivory Productions

My first short film, Aayu, was in the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival in 2005, and then selected by Apichatpong Weerasethakul for his travelling exhibition Heads and Tails (which went to Dublin, I was pleased because it "took" me to Ireland)

The first time I went to Japan was with my installation film for Pinaree Sanpitak at the Yokohama Biennale 2005. I was "back" there in 2017 in the programme of the Yokohama Arts Festival

I won an award from Discovery Channel for a short film

I got into documentary as a means to learn about Thailand

I once shook Jules Dassin's hand - dropping his name is random. I also saw Agnes Varda in a Chinese restaurant in Paris, and Leos Carax having a cigarette near the Pont Neuf

I got into photography as an extension of choreographic film but fell in love with it

I shoot medium and large format analogue film

Manit Sriwanichpoom included me in his New Visions showcase of Photography in 2017

I started writing as an extension of my film and photographic practice and became obsessed

During the pandemic I made a home darkroom and spent hours making light bulb flashed contact prints
